Model Jean Campbell Debuts a Dramatic New Pixie Cut
Jean Campbell has had long hair her entire life. An elfin beauty, it’s been her calling card as a model and ishonest cover girl for the past nine years. But three months before her 25th birthday, she decided to switch things up with a dramatic new pixie cut.
“It feels so liberating to cut it off,†she says over text. “It’s such a big change both personally and professionally. It really feels like starting a new chapter.â€
It was around Christmas time when Jean decided she was going to make the cut. She was in Brazil on a digital detox and surrounded by nature. “In the quiet and beauty of where I was, I had a wave of energy and excitement about life and I suppose my hair was just part of that mood.â€
There was no question as to who would be creating this new look for her. Hair stylist Luke Hersheson has been cutting Jean’s hair since she was 16 years old.
“I chose Luke because he’s produced an incredible body of work over the years and he’s a great hairdresser,†she writes. “I love his work and his ideas.â€
So, how did the cut evolve? “We wanted to do something radical,†says Hersheson. “We looked at pictures of Linda Evangelista and Edie Sedgwick and even Sienna Miller when she played Edie. We wanted to do something that felt soft and feminine and not graphic and hard, kind of like when you put your hair up and leave all the front out—there is a feeling of being short but it’s soft and playful.â€
How the Pixie Cut Evolved Into Today’s Biggest Beauty Statement
“Jean has this amazing confidence,†Hersheson continues. “It was really important that the haircut felt part of her and that she was wearing it as opposed to the haircut wearing her.â€
As the inimitable Coco Chanel once said: “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.†And for Jean, this certainly is a big change. But it’s one she’s excited by. “When the first bit came off it made me smile and laugh and then there was a moment where I felt very different suddenly and slightly nervous,†she recalls. “But I couldn’t be happier with the finished look. I suppose now I don’t have so much hair I feel a bit more raw when I look in the mirror. Now I know I don’t need long hair to feel great. In fact, it almost makes me feel more of a woman strangely.â€
Feeling inspired by Jean’s new ’do? Ask your hairdresser for a razor cut to keep the ends soft and fluid, leaving the edges longer around the face to make sure it feels soft and can be tucked behind your ear. Part the hair just off the center to frame the face and use Hershesons’s Almost Everything Cream, or something similar, to create the separated texture.
