The company that is in charge of casting for the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical wicked has put out a casting call for actors who use a wheelchair . The announcement was posted on Wednesday and marks a huge step forward for actors who are differently-abled. The virtual call from The Telsey Office specifies that the movie is looking to “cast authentically,†encouraging wheelchair users (ambulatory or non-ambulatory) of any ethnicity to submit themselves for the part of Nessarose.
Development for the Wicked movie is well underway after years of delays now that In The Heights’ Jon M. Chu is working on it. The movie musical will see Ariana Grande take on Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba in the Wizard of Oz origin story that has become a Broadway mainstay over the years. Ahead of production beginning in 2022, more casting is taking place, with one key role creating a mass search for a talented wheelchair user.
As fans of the musical will know, Elphaba’s younger sister in the musical is Nessarose Thropp, who is physically disabled following complications during birth. In one key musical number in Wicked, Nessa being a wheelchair user comes to the forefront during “Dancing Through Life†when she thinks she cannot take part in the festivities. As revealed by The Telsey Office open casting call for the role, the Wicked production is looking to “cast authentically,†specifically with “wheelchair users†being “strongly encouraged†to try out for the part.

The Wicked movie really seems to be gathering pace! Not only has the production finally set rehearsals for summer 2022 (in the UK no less), it has also launched an open casting search for the role of Nessarose, according to posts by casting agency The Telsey Office. A character who uses a wheelchair in Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's musical, the film, directed by In the Heights' Jon M Chu, is looking to cast authentically, stating it is searching for "actors who are wheelchair users (ambulatory and non-ambulatory) are strongly encouraged to submit for the role ".
Many wheelchair users haven’t got the strength to lift their chairs or, this is my case, the strain the twisting puts on her back could cause back strain and severe pain. Getting the wheels , let alone, the chair , is very hard and time consuming. Besides, all wheelchair loaders have a bunch of moving parts. And the NZ company that makes these (Abiliquip) has been around for over ten years, has a wide range of mobility products, and no indication their products are of low quality or reliability.

As the casting search details, rehearsals are set to begin in summer 2022 in the United Kingdom. The Universal production is looking for a female in the age group of 18 to 30 of any ethnicity to play the role of Nessarose. As the story goes, Nessa has spent most of her life in a wheelchair, but has a romantic night getting to know a Munchkin boy named Boq and becomes obsessively attached to him. Her ultimate origin story is to become the Wicked Witch of the East, who memorably has a less than glowing relationship with the Munchkins later in her life.
It’s certainly an incredible and rare opportunity for the lucky talented actor and singer, who may be a wheelchair user and get to play the role. The role has not been played by actual wheelchair users in the past and could be a great chance to open the door for this community in a major movie musical.
Now people are signing a viral petition to keep James Corden out of the Wicked movie
Now people are signing a viral petition to keep James Corden out of the Wicked movie -We’ve seen him in a number of movie musicals in recent years, the terrifying box office flop Cats, his offensive performance as a gay Broadway actor in The Prom, and his role in Disney musical Into the Woods.
At the top of 2021, GLAAD reported that the percentage of regular characters with a disability saw a slight increase, up to 3.5% from the year prior’s 3.1%. People with disabilities are severely underrepresented in movies and television, though we’re beginning to see more real wheelchair users play roles like these. For example, in the Hulu hit Run, Kiera Allen, who is a real wheelchair user nabbed the role, but it wasn’t without some people reportedly faking disabilities to star in the Sarah Paulson movie. By the way, Allen would honestly be a great choice for Nessa if she can sing!

Thank goodness: The Wicked movie is finally taking form. Nearly a decade after plans to adapt the smash musical were announced, we finally have two superstar leads attached to the project: Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. A vocal powerhouse, Erivo has won a Tony, Grammy, and daytime Emmy for her role as Celie in the revival of The Color Purple, per Variety. She’s also appeared in films like Harriet (which earned her an Oscar nomination) and Widows, and most recently portrayed Aretha Franklin in the TV show Genius.
The casting call says: ' SEEKING : Nessarose — to play female, 18-30, any ethnicity. Elphaba's 'tragically beautiful', lonely, compassionate younger sister, she was favoured by her father. She has spent most of her life in a wheelchair . She becomes obsessively attached to Boq and ultimately becomes the Wicked Witch of the East. Further to the above the casting adds: 'Looking to cast authentically. Actors who are wheelchair users (ambulatory and non- ambulatory) are strongly encouraged to submit for the role .'
" The Wicked " is a supernatural horror film that is part urban legend, and part ghost story. The movie was directed by Peter Winther who makes the jump from television to feature film with this wicked little treat. I also found the evil supernatural entity of the witch very dark, and horrible, so I didn't really want her to prevail in the end. She was pretty vicious. The directing for the film manages to keep your attention with some pretty creepy concepts, and point of view moments, that allows the movie to be dark without being too dark.
